에티오피아 출신 강뉴부대원 후손 라헬 솔로몬(28) 씨는 한국살이 4년 차다. 자신이 태어나기 훨씬 전 한국전쟁에 참전한 외조부의 인연으로 한국 땅을 밟았다.

에티오피아는 한국전쟁 당시 황실근위대를 중심으로 한 최정예 강뉴부대원 6천37명을 5차례에 걸쳐 파병했다. 라헬 씨의 외조부는 그 일원이었다.

라헬 씨는 2022년 에티오피아 변호사 시험에 합격했다. 참전 후 전역한 외조부가 훗날 판사가 된 데 영향을 받아 법학을 전공하게 됐다고 했다.

에티오피아에서 30년가량 거주하면서 한국전 참전용사와 후손들을 돕는 일에 헌신해온 한국인 여자 선생님이 지어준 이름이다. 그녀의 성을 받아 '하은희'가 됐다.

어린 시절부터 한국 드라마를 즐겨 본 라헬 씨는 조금 알았던 한국어 능력을 하 선생님의 도움으로 빠르게 키울 수 있었다며, TV에 잘 나오지 않는 한국 문화와 예절까지 가르쳐주신 양엄마 같은 분이라고 소개했다.

◇ 강뉴부대(Kagnew Battalion)

강뉴부대는 하일레 셀라시에 당시 에티오피아 황제가 유엔군의 일원으로 한국전에 파병한 부대에 친히 붙인 이름이다.

'강뉴(Kagnew)'는 에티오피아어로 '격파하다,' '돌파하다'라는 뜻을 담고 있다.

에티오피아는 1951년부터 총 5차례에 걸쳐 황실근위병 중심의 병력 6천37명(연인원)을 한국에 파견했다.

미 제7보병사단 예하에 배치됐던 강뉴부대는 253차례 전투에 참여해 한 번도 패퇴하지 않았다는 기록이 전해진다.

전투 과정에서 전사자 122명, 부상자 536명의 희생을 치렀다.

Rahel Solomon (28), an Ethiopian descendant of a veteran of the Kagnew Battalion, has been living in Korea for four years. She came to Korea through the historical connection created by her maternal grandfather, who fought in the Korean War long before she was born.

During the war, Ethiopia dispatched 6,037 elite troops from the Imperial Guard in five rotations under the Kagnew Battalion. Solomon's grandfather was among them.

In 2022, Solomon passed Ethiopia's national bar examination. She said she decided to study law partly because of her grandfather, who later became a judge after completing his military service.

Her opportunity to study in Korea came through Hwacheon County in Gangwon Province, which has run a scholarship program since 2009 for descendants of Ethiopian veterans of the Korean War.

Selected as a scholarship recipient in 2023, she completed a master's degree in political science at Myongji University.

Asked when she first felt she was truly in a different country after arriving in Korea, Solomon said the seasonal changes stood out the most.

"The language was already familiar to me, so I didn't experience a big cultural shock," she said.

"In Ethiopia, especially in Addis Ababa, the weather is mild throughout the year. Experiencing Korea's harsh winters and hot summers made me realize I was truly in a different country."

She also said she has visited Hwacheon more than six times for the famous Sancheoneo Ice Festival, which is a type of mountain trout.

"Fishing on the frozen river and touching ice directly were experiences that would be hard to imagine in Ethiopia," she said.

Speaking about her grandfather, who connected her to Korea, Solomon said she never met him.

"He passed away before I was born, but I heard many stories about him from my grandmother," she said.

"He often spoke about the brutality of the Korean War; yet, he was very proud that Korea defended its freedom."

She also heard that her grandfather always prayed for the reunification of the Korean Peninsula.

"For our family, my grandfather's participation in the Korean War is a source of pride."

Asked what she would say to him if he were alive today, Solomon answered, "I would tell him that Korea has become a peaceful and free country, and that thanks to the connection he created, I am now pursuing my dreams here."
