Former Indonesia national team head coach Patrick Kluivert shared his thoughts on meeting former Indonesia boss Shin Tae-yong before Barcelona Legends’ emphatic victory over Liverpool Legends in Seoul.
Barcelona Legends defeated Liverpool Legends, competing under the name “The Reds,” 8-3 in the 2026 Champions Impact in Seoul at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Friday evening. An official crowd of 36,944 attended the event.
The Spanish giants’ legends side produced a dominant performance, led by former stars such as Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Andrés Iniesta, who continue to showcase remarkable quality despite retirement. Kluivert opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Steven Gerrard equalized for The Reds. Barcelona pulled away after the break with goals from Rivaldo, Nolito, Cristian Tello and others to complete an eight-goal display.
Following the match, Kluivert attended the official press conference and reflected on both the game and the warm reception from Korean supporters.
“It was a wonderful evening,” Kluivert said. “We were very happy to play in front of such a large crowd. World-class former players came to Seoul and showed Korean fans what they can still do. Barcelona and Liverpool legends have played many matches like this around the world, but the welcome we received here in Seoul was fantastic.”
The former Dutch striker, who scored Barcelona’s opening goal with a composed finish reminiscent of his playing days, also praised the service he received from former teammates.
“First of all, we’re not young anymore,” he joked. “Naturally, it’s more difficult to play than it used to be. As a striker, I always try to find space. With players like Iniesta and Busquets behind me, I knew they would find the right pass at the right moment. I went into the match with that in mind. Liverpool also played with three center-backs, which made things more challenging.”
One of the notable moments before kickoff came when Kluivert greeted Shin Tae-yong during a pre-match ceremony involving distinguished guests. The two shared a friendly exchange, drawing attention given their connection through the Indonesia national team.
Shin previously managed Indonesia before Kluivert was appointed as his successor. Although Kluivert has since stepped down from the role, the coaching link between the two remains significant.
Asked about the interaction, Kluivert was quick to emphasize his respect for Shin’s contribution to Indonesian football.
“We don’t have a personal relationship,” Kluivert explained. “But I know that Coach Shin made a tremendous contribution to the development of Indonesian football during his time in charge. I later took over that role and continued the work. I believe both Coach Shin and I have played important parts in helping Indonesian football move forward.”
The meeting provided a symbolic moment during a night that celebrated football’s past stars, while also highlighting the lasting impact both coaches have had on one of Asia’s fastest-growing football nations.
